The Approach: My Take On Design Some good spit polish goes a long way.
Good graphic design is more than making things look pretty. It needs to have a creative concept, it needs to be clean and professional, and with the advent of the Web it needs to be user friendly. Ultimately, good graphic design must be eye catching, it must maintain viewer attention, it must communicate, and it must cause a reaction.
Most think creativity often needs to be sacrificed to maintain a professional look. So commonly designs are stuck within certain predictable conventions – crutches that lead to poor design. However, with a proper application of design principles and fundamentals (like having a strong grid based layout) even the most elaborate creative concepts can be clean and professional.
With proper layout, your audience can be guided through content with ease. This allows for effective communication of your brand name and message. Design options increase. Then, every design can be unique, and therefore more eye catching and memorable – that's good advertising.
Ultimately there's a lot more to it than that. There are many other principles and fundamentals often neglected. But, this is a website, not a book. ;)
